Check Your BMI
Why BMI matters to your health
Do you know your BMI? Do you know what BMI is? In simple terms, BMI (Body Mass Index) is a projection of how much fat you have in your body.
Why is this important? The most basic definition of being overweight or obese is having too much body fat, and this presents a risk to your health.
While not perfect, for most people BMI is a very good gauge of their level of body fat, and it’s a good place to start when thinking about improving your health.

Healthy BMI in Adults
According to The World Health Organization (WHO), for adults, the healthy range for BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9.
- Overweight is defined as a body mass index of 25 to 29.9, and obese is defined as a body mass index of 30 or higher. This is the same for men and women, regardless of their age.
- It’s estimated that 1.5 billion adults over the age of 20 (about 34 percent of the world’s adult population) are overweight or obese. By 2030, this number is expected to rise to more than 3 billion people.
The risk of developing health problems, including several chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, rises progressively for BMIs above 21, as does the risk of dying early.
